Gymnastics Competition Wins

Last week, the Fishergate Gymnastics squad took part in the York Partnership Gymnastics competition at Archbishop Holgate School. The competition was split into 3 strands, Year 1/2, Year 3/4 and Year 5/6, with the winners of each competition going forwards to represent York in the North Yorkshire Youth Games in June.

All of our squads performed fantastically well and were a credit to the school. Both the Year 1/2 squad and the Year 5/6 squad won their events, with the Year 3/4 team narrowly missing out in their event.

The Youth Games final will now take place in York against teams from Harrogate, Selby, Craven, Ryedale, Hambleton and Scarborough.

Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers

active kids picOnce again we will be collecting Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers to purchase PE equipment for school. Vouchers are available in Sainsbury’s stores and online between Wednesday 28th January and Tuesday 5th May and can be sent to class teachers or put straight into the collection box on the Reception Desk. Last year was a fantastic success, with over 13,500 vouchers collected, with which we were able to purchase a new set of tennis equipment, dodgeballs, athletics hurdles and rugby balls.

This year we are aiming to collect enough vouchers to purchase a new Table Tennis Table for 18,000 vouchers!! Your support is much appreciated, so please enlist the help of friends and family to help us achieve our goal.

GB Athlete Visit

On Wednesday, 4th March, Fishergate School will be welcoming International Athlete James Denny for a morning of sports activities. James will be undertaking fitness circuits with each class, before conducting a special assembly during which he will undertake a question and answer session with pupils to discuss his sporting journey.

James Denny

James started diving in 2005 at the age of 12 and since 2011 has represented Great Britain at International level. He has competed at the European Championships and won the Silver Medal in the 10m synchro at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, with his diving partner, Tom Daley. He is now aiming to represent Great Britain in the 2016 Rio Olympics, and is participating in the SportsFORSchools scheme.

Each pupil has now been given a sponsorship form in order to raise funds to support training costs for our athlete, as well as raise money for school PE equipment. Children will receive prizes for the money they raise, including a blue Sports for Schools wristband for over £5, an autographed red wristband for over £15 and an autographed A4 athlete poster for over £30. PE kits will need to be worn on the day, so please ensure these are in school.

We look forward to welcoming James, and hopefully cheering him on in Rio in 2016!
