Samba Time in Year 5&6!

On Wednesday 20th January Year 5/6 children really enjoyed a samba workshop!  They had opportunity to play some rhythm based games, and learnt how to perform a samba on a selection of Latin American instruments including ganzas, agogos, tambours and drums. It sounded great! It also tied in brilliantly with the work we have been doing in class, as we have been learning all about Bernstein’s ‘Mambo’ from ‘Symphonic Dances’ from ‘West Side Story.’ Amazing!

Sign2sing

sign2sing

Sign2sing is back! On Wednesday 3rd February Fishergate will be taking part in this charity event. We are asking that pupils wear a scarf and bring in a £1 donation for this fantastic charity. Key stages 1 and 2 (years 1 to 6) will be signing and singing the sign2sing song 2016. We are also having an extra cake stall at the end of the day on Wednesday 3rd February. Please bring in cakes to be sold at the end of the day and all proceeds will go to this charity.

Sign2sing is organised by the Deaf Health Charity SignHealth which raises funds to help vunerable deaf children and adults. For more information about this national event please see www.sign2sing.org.uk.

Thank you for your support.

Christmas fun at Willow House!

Just before Christmas we enjoyed another trip to Willow House with the Musical Connections project. We had fun singing and dancing and even had a snowball fight (with balloons!). Fishergate is very lucky to have a link with Willow House and are proud to be able to help older people in the community to enjoy music and socialising with others in a residential home environment. For more information on this project please see the Musical Connections website http://www.musicalconnections.org.uk/

Singing and Signing with IMPs

Last week we took part in a fantastic Singing and Signing workshop after school led by apprentices and volunteers from IMPs (Inclusive Music Project). We learned some fun, new songs and even got to show off our own singing talents sharing one of our favourite rounds. The whole choir had great fun together with our new friends from IMPs and even got to do a bit of funky dancing!

Thank you to everyone at Accessible Arts and Media who made this workshop such a great success.

Willow House Fun!

We had lots of fun on our last visit to Willow House. Our workshop was linked to our work in school on the Ten Pieces project. We all went on a journey on a boat across a story sea and had fun dressing up for our celebration at the end! The children worked really well with the residents and caught up with old friends. We are really looking forward to our next visit!

Thank you to Fiona Chapman of Musical Connections for her fantastic work with us during this project.

Choral Festival

The choral festival was an exciting day for all of Fishergate’s choir. We were involved in some activities: composing our own body percussion pieces and painting our school banner. At the end of the day we took part in a concert and the Mayor of York came to watch us perform. We sang different songs: “Rocking all over the world”, “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. It was great experience and fun for all of us.Lauren Cozens (Fishergate Choir Member)

We also got a great write-up in the Press!

Anna Meredith

On Bank Holiday Monday children from all over York came together to take part in a Body Percussion workshop led by Anna Meredith, composer of Connect It, one of the Ten Pieces we have been studying in school. Children from Fishergate were very confident showing their moves that they had already learned in school and came up with some great ideas of how to make to make their own composition. We had a stomping good time!

The Wizard of Oz

Picture of Dorothy's red shoes from the play.At the end of the Spring Term Year 3 and 4 put on a magical performance of the Wizard of Oz. The children worked hard learning lots of lines and moves for some tricky dances! Songs included ‘Home on the Range’, ’Stand by Me’ and ‘Over the Rainbow’ from the classic film. The show was a roaring success and the whole cast had a great time performing!  You can see lots of photos from the show in our gallery.
