Year 5&6

A visit to Y5/6 from Christian Aid

On Wednesday 5th April, Y5/6 had a visitor from Christian Aid to talk to them about the work of this charity. This was to tie in with their R.E. unit, where they have been exploring the question from the City of York Syllabus ‘Is it better to express your religion in arts and architecture or in charity and generosity?’

We learnt about how Christian Aid has a vision to end poverty, and works with partner agencies all over the world to tackle issues such as the problems of climate change, and the refugee crisis.

KS2 were fortunate to have a visit from St John’s Ambulance where all the children took part in a practical session. We covered making a primary survey of a casualty to moving the casualty into the recovery position. The children were fantastic listeners and the course was presented in a fun way starting with a Mr Bean way of NOT to do it!

Your child is invited to come dressed as a book character. We will try and guess who they are!

We will also have a flash read at 9.00 in both halls. Every child and adult will bring their reading book into the hall and read silently together. If parents and carers would like join us with their own books we would love to see them.

Early Years will have a “stay and read” session in their setting.

Key Stage One will meet in the lower hall.

Key Stage Two will meet in the upper hall.

We look forward to seeing you!Dani Rees, Deputy Headteacher

Y5/6 Composition Workshop

Y5/6 spent the morning working with Jenny and Lucy from the music Education Group, exploring Body Percussion.
First of all we thought about different sounds we could make with our bodies – we had lots of ideas from clapping and stamping, to thumping our chests and tapping our heads!
Then we watched a clip called ‘Connect it’ by Anna Meredith who uses clapping, stamping, shouting and beatboxing instead of instruments. (This is one of the BBC ‘s 10 Pieces – you can view it here.
Then we practised the chant ‘Knees , clap , click -first with words and sounds, then with just sounds. First we did it as a whole class, then we gradually split up into 4 groups and performed it as a round.
Then it was composition time!
We made up some chants based on what we had for breakfast.
e.g. rice crispies and a glass of juice! , and thought of different body sounds . We combined 4 different ones – the results were amazing!

Lunar photography

One of our y5/6 pupils took this amazing photograph of the moon with their mum’s camera phone and the kind assistance (and very impressive telescope!) of one of the yorkastro members at the Stargazing Live Party earlier this month. You can click to enlarge the picture – what details can you spot?
