Parenting support

Being a parent is both an incredibly rewarding and difficult job! The Parenting team led by Family Matters York are offering a number of courses when sometimes things are a bit tricky!

The courses start in January.

Time Out for Parents: The Primary Years this is running at Knavesmire Primary School on Friday mornings. Cost: FREE

This 5-session course is suitable for parents and carers of children at primary school. Topics covered include:

  • building your child’s self esteem
  • setting and maintaining reasonable boundaries
  • keeping children safe

The course is fun and interactive and there are plenty of opportunities to share your own ideas and learn from other parents.

They also offer single session KS1 or KS2 Taster Workshops, covering issues relevant for parents of children in each of these age groups.

Strengthening families is running at Haxby Road Children’s centre on Thursday mornings and also in the Acomb area (times to be confirmed).

Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities is a longer course which helps parents to look in detail at how they can best equip their children to live violence-free, healthy lives and play a positive role in their community. Some courses are run specifically for fathers, by fathers.

Topics covered include:

  • A toolkit of strategies for increasing respectful behaviour from your children and getting them to work with you, not against you.
  • Techniques for building closer relationships with your children.
  • Information about child development and understanding how your children think.
  • Find out more about how the way you were brought up affects how you bring up your own children.
  • Find out how to get more involved with your community and get more out of it too

Family Links Parenting puzzle is running at St. Hilda’s on Thursday mornings and at Westfield school on Tuesday afternoons.

Known as The Family Links Parent Nurturing Programme. Do you feel you need to gain more self confidence, learn how to nurture yourself and your children, whilst developing strategies to manage children’s behaviour and improve relationships? Put the pieces together on The Parenting Puzzle.
