Fishergate pupils visit York Mosque

As part of our R.E. lesson Year 5/6 paid a visit to York Mosque on Wednesday 18th November.  We were enthusiastically and warmly greeted by the Imam, Abid Salik, who spent around an hour talking to our children. Although the trip was fundamentally to learn about the teachings of Islam and the way York Mosque serves the local community, the Imam was open to all the children’s questions. He answered with humour and sensitivity. He then went on to talk  about the terrible situation in Paris, how the perpetrators ‘do not represent Islam’.  We then held a minute’s silence, which felt even more poignant within the Mosque.
I am sure all the children came home full of wonderful stories about their morning spent at the York Mosque!  We were made to feel very welcome and it is well worth a visit.
