Year 3&4

Y3/4 learn about Passover!

Learning About Passover_2

We were thrilled to welcome Ben Rich (Dad of Hannah and Aaron) into to school, to help us to learn all about the Jewish Festival of Passover.

Ben talked to us about the story of Passover, and explained why it is important to Jewish people. We learned about the symbolism of the different foods that are eaten, and that it is a festival of freedom, because the children ask questions during the meal, symbolisingLearning About Passover_3 our freedom to learn and ask questions in our everyday lives.

We tasted some different foods that are eaten during the celebration including Matzos and also some herbs dipped in salt water ,and learnt about their significance. Learning About Passover_1Some people were brave enough to taste the horseradish. It was very hot!

We ended with a fun game where we had to hunt for the missing half of a Matzo.

Thank you Ben for a great learning experience!

Fossil Fun in 3/4

In Yr 3/4 as part of our Rocks unit of work, we made our very own fossils.  We wore goggles and gloves while we mixed the Plaster of Paris, for safety.

We were finally ready to see if our fossil making was a success.  We were really impressed by the results!

Bridge Building

Year 3/4 and Yr 5/6 were involved in the fantastic team building Bridge STEM challenge this term. The aim was to build a bridge using Jenga sized pieces of wood, that had the widest gap in the middle.

Yr 3/4 managed a whopping 35cm! Best so far! Dare you take on the challenge?

Dancing Through the Decades

Music Enrichment Day_21KS2 had a fantastic day this week travelling through the decades of the 20th century. We sang the Blues in the 1920’s, danced our way through Swing and hand jived in to the 1950’s! It was all Peace and Love in the 1960’s (complete with duvets!) and we all realised we all knew a lot more about music from the 1970’s than we thought. Finally on our journey we took part in a Battle of the Bands in the 1990’s, along with our very own Liam Gallagher! The children gained an insight in to iconic music and artists from these decades as well as the cultural effects they had on the world. Of course, we all dressed up for the part, the order of the day definitely being David Bowie! From Elvis to the Spice Girls, Paul McCartney to Kate Bush we all looked (and sounded!) the part.

Christmas fun at Willow House!

Just before Christmas we enjoyed another trip to Willow House with the Musical Connections project. We had fun singing and dancing and even had a snowball fight (with balloons!). Fishergate is very lucky to have a link with Willow House and are proud to be able to help older people in the community to enjoy music and socialising with others in a residential home environment. For more information on this project please see the Musical Connections website http://www.musicalconnections.org.uk/

Remembrance Day 2015 Y3/4 Visit to York Cemetery

Our Y3/4 children were invited to the cemetery on Remembrance Day to lay special poppy crosses on the war graves. We had a very peaceful afternoon, with some real reflection, thinking about the people who had given their lives in battles since the First World War.

The children also observed a two minute silence at the War memorial at the cemetery and two children were chosen to lay a special poppy wreath in memory of the fallen soldiers. We feel very privileged to have been asked again to take place in this very important day by York Cemetery.

Hawaiian Bread

The Yr 3/ 4 children enjoyed making Hawaiian bread as part of the global introduction to the year….

…and it tasted scrumptious!
