Yr 3/4 Tennis Festival

DSC00389On Wednesday 10th June, Fishergate pupils from Year 3/4 took part in the York Partnership Tennis festival at Wigginton Tennis Club. Eight schools from around the city entered to event, with teams being split into two pools of four. Players each played three matches, with the first player to reach seven points winning the game.

For the girls, Year 3 pupils Charlotte Hemlin and Ruby Shaw were representing the school, whilst Year 4 students Akshar Cowgli and Ashwin Tamang represented the boys. All of our players put in a fantastic display, demonstrating excellent effort and sportsmanship throughout. A special mention should go to Ruby Shaw, who won all of her 3 matches in a fantastic display of tennis.

With the leagues being decided on the combined number of points won across the 12 matches, the players were really unlucky to lose out on a place in the final to Robert Wilkinson by just a single point!

Players from Year 5/6 will take part in their own competition next week.

Partnership Cricket Festival

IMG_0273Last week, Fishergate teams from Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 attended theIMG_0287 York Partnership cricket festival at Dunnington CC. The teams were chosen from players who have attended cricket club with Mr Kelly throughout the Summer Term, with the winners of the tournament going through the represent York in the North Yorkshire Youth Games.

Teams played 3 matches in the group stage, with the winners of each league playing one another in the final. The pupils enjoyed a fantastic day in the sunshine, and displayed some excellent batting skills. Both teams won one, and lost two matches and so unfortunately did not qualify for the finals, however the improvement in their skills has been fantastic to see and was a credit to Mr Kelly’s hard work with them.

The tournament was eventually won by a very strong Dunnington team, who will now progress to the Youth Games. Any children wishing to join the school cricket club should contact Mr Kelly. The club runs on a Monday night from 3.15-4.15.

The team took part in a variety of chipping and putting challenges against ten other teams from across the city, and produced a fantastic effort to finish in 4th place overall.

A very special mention must go to Year 2 pupil, Zach Hemlin, who was drafted in at the last minute due to absence, and produced a brilliant performance against children who were mostly two years older. The children who represented the school were Reece Stillie, Charlotte Hemlin, Megan Storr, Leon Atkinson, Beau Wannell-Jamieson, Zach Hemlin, Kian Atkinson and Sam Farrell.

For those children who are interested in Tri-Golf, Mr Pennington runs a KS2 Tri-Golf club on Thursdays for which places are still available. Should you wish to enrol, please see Mr Pennington or speak to the school office.

James Denny

Olympian Pics 3Last week, we were delighted to welcome international diver, James Denny, to school. James visited us as part of the SportsForSchools programme, and spent the morning with each class in school, taking part in a variety of fitness sessions and talking about how he began a career in sport .

JDThe morning concluded with James leading a full school assembly to talk about his diving experiences alongside Tom Daley, in winning a Silver Medal in the Commonwealth Games and his future hopes of competing for Great Britain in the Rio Olympics in 2016.

As you can see in the video below, he even treated us to a few acrobatic skills!!!

Netballers Qualify For Finals

SSP Logo Two Year 5/6 teams represented Fishergate in the Fulford Cluster Netball Competition on Wednesday 11th March. It was a great event with Miss Hawes leading a group of 14 players from Fishergate involved, who all worked brilliantly and displayed some great team skills and tactical awareness.

The Fishergate teams played against teams from St Oswalds, Naburn, Dunnington, Elvington and Wheldrake, with one team winning one game, losing one game and drawing three games to finish third.

Our other team performed even better, winning all their games without even conceding a goal, and have now qualified for the City of York finals, which will take place on Tuesday 17th March at Joseph Rowntree School.

Well done to Miss Hawes and all the children involved, and thank you to parents for your continued support.
