Y5/6 Composition Workshop

Y5/6 spent the morning working with Jenny and Lucy from the music Education Group, exploring Body Percussion.
First of all we thought about different sounds we could make with our bodies – we had lots of ideas from clapping and stamping, to thumping our chests and tapping our heads!
Then we watched  a clip called ‘Connect it’ by Anna Meredith who uses clapping, stamping, shouting and beatboxing instead of instruments. (This is one of the BBC ‘s 10 Pieces – you can view it here.
Then we  practised the  chant ‘Knees , clap , click -first with words and sounds, then with just sounds. First we did it as a whole class, then we gradually split up into 4 groups and performed it as a round.
Then it was composition time!
We made up some chants based on what we had for breakfast.
e.g. rice crispies and  a glass of juice! , and thought of different body sounds . We combined 4 different ones – the results were amazing!

Sign2Sing 2017

Last week, we took part in Sign2Sing, the annual fundraiser for Sign Health. We had a great time learning the song ‘Together’ and invited our parents to come and see us sing and sign. The whole school came dressed in pink, purple and blue and we raised £170 for this fantastic charity. If you would like to find out any more about this fantastic yearly event  visit the website http://www.sign2sing.org.uk

Listen to songs from our Young Voices concert HERE!

We had such a fantastic time last week at Manchester Arena but understand that not everybody could come along to listen. But, fear not, you can listen to Fishergate Choir singing with over 8000 other children HERE!

Our Amazing Young Voices Adventure!

Wow! What an amazing day we were having already but the most important bit of the day was still to come! As we sat in our seats, we saw the arena filling up with parents, family and friends. We managed to see some our parents from afar but would have needed binoculars to see them properly!

We were all ready for the concert to begin and as the lights went down it was incredible to see everybody’s tiny torches lighting up the darkness. The concert started and it was very loud! We sang a number of songs together as the Young Voices Choir with over 8,400 other children! We even got to perform with professional musicians including Tabby Callaghan from the X Factor and one of the Britain’s Got Talent finalists who had taken part in Young Voices 10 years ago, how inspirational! As well as singing, we were treated to performances from the Beatbox Collective and Urban Strides. They were brilliant! We then got to take part in some dancing with Urban Strides and even a dance off with our parents! We enjoyed singing all of the songs but our choir favourites were Birdhouse in Your Soul, Sing and the Pop Medley. We were particularly impressed by our singing in Welsh……!!

After locating our coach in a crazily busy Manchester, we headed home. We were all very tired but some of us were still singing! Others spent a bit more time relaxing, including the whole of the back seat of the coach who snoozed for the majority of the journey home.

What an amazing day we had, it’s an experience you can’t quite describe without being there but it was worth all the hard work we had put in before the big day itself.

Thank you to all our parents and friends that came to see us in Manchester, we hope you had an amazing experience too!

Young Voices Rehearsals

On Thursday 2nd February, Fishergate Choir travelled to Manchester Arena to take part in Young Voices, the biggest choir concert in the world. When we first arrived the arena looked pretty empty and we were all amazed by the size of it! It soon filled with other schools and we spent the afternoon practising both songs and dance moves (including time to perfect our air guitar for the Rock Medley!). Andy from Urban Strides also kept us entertained with his humour and infectious enthusiasm for dance. We were all looking forward to the dance battle with our parents later in the evening! We stopped for tea, had time to chat with friends and even get a bit of fresh air as it was very hot and stuffy in the arena! We were all looking forward to the evening ahead…….

Homeward bound – and still singing!

We are on the coach and on our way, and some of the children are still singing! Our lovely driver says that we should be back on time at about 11pm. We will update you here if that changes!

All the staff are very proud of the Fishergate children who have shown exemplary behaviour and a great attitude all day.
